Summer Institute
for Teachers
Eagle Bluff Environmental
Learning Center
JULY 27-31, 2009

About the Institute: The Earth Partnership for Schools (EPS) Summer Institute for Teachers provides participants with opportunities to learn about the cultural and natural history
of ecosystems through a variety of inter-disciplinary hands-on activities and field experiences.  Teams of up to four teachers will begin to utilize individualized curricula and school action plans to create meaningful experiences for students through the process of ecological site restoration.

About EPS: The Earth Partnership for Schools Program started in 1991 as an outgrowth of the University of Wisconsin-Madison Arboretum’s focus on ecological restoration as a way of establishing a positive relationship between people and the land.

The following priorities guide the Earth Partnership Summer Institutes:

  • Build ecological, cultural, and historical knowledge: Participants will be provided with opportunities to learn more about the ecological, cultural, and historical knowledge associated with the restoration process and school-wide use of that restoration as an outdoor laboratory. The prairie ecosystem and its restoration will be a focus of the 2008 Summer Institute.
  • Model a variety of teaching methods: Participants will gain an understanding of ecological restoration and project planning through interdisciplinary, hands-on, and inquiry-based teaching.
  • Provide participatory experiences: Participants will be provided interdiciplinary experiences so they will feel more confident and enthusiastic using a restoration for facilitating inquiry-based learning and scientific research with students.
  • Build community partnerships: Provide participants with opportunities explore collaborative strategies to strengthen school teams and gain additional community support for their restoration and curricular efforts.
