Adopt a Raptor

The Raptor Education Program “took flight” Raptor logo
in April of 2001. Following federal and
state requirements, each of these birds
are permanently disabled. These injuries,
sustained from vehicle collisions and genetic disorders, inhibit them from being able to survive in the wild.

Now their job is to teach people of all ages about the important role raptors play as predators in our ecosystems as well as the effects human culture has on wildlife populations.

By adopting one of our resident raptors, you help to provide for the daily feeding, care and any necessary medical treatment for your chosen bird. Your adoption also supports the Eagle Bluff mission of educating people about raptors as part of the greater picture of environmental conservation.

Our Raptors:

Red tail hawk Red-tailed Hawk
Buteo jamaicensis
Age: Eight years (hatched in 2000)
Sex: Female
Height: 20” (from head to tail)
Weight: 3.5 lbs
Where Found: Chicago, IL
Injury: In November of 2000, this Red-tailed hawk was hit by a car and left unable to fly. A motorist brought the hawk to a rehabilitation center. The tip of the left wing was damaged beyond repair so it was amputated making full flight impossible.
American Kestrel

American Kestrel
Falco sparverius
Age: Unknown
Sex: Female
Height: 10” (from head to tail)
Weight: 5 ounces
Where Found: Bettendorf, IA
Injury: In the summer of 2002, a car hit this American kestrel, breaking her right humerus. The injury healed on its own, albeit incorrectly, leaving her permanently disabled.

Barred Owl Barred Owl
Strix varia
Age: Unknown
Sex: Female
Height: 20” (from head to tail)
Weight: 2.5 lbs
Where Found: Chicago, IL
Injury: In December of 2001, a car hit this Barred owl, breaking her right radius and ulna and leaving her blind in her left eye. The wing needed to be surgically pinned, leaving her permanently disabled.

Peregrine Falcon Peregrine Falcon
Falco peregrinus
Age: Five years (hatched in 2003)
Sex: Female
Height: 16 ” (from head to tail)
Weight: 2 lbs
Where Found: Fruita, CO
Injury: Hatched in captivity, this Peregrine falcon was meant to hunt for the sport of falconry. Unfortunately, she has a genetic feather disorder that causes the feather shafts to split, which doesn't allow her to fly more than a few feet at a time.
